“What America Means To Me” In a Quilt

No, not a school assignment.  This is a quilt that I made 5-6 years ago while traveling around in an RV.  After we settled back down in a house and I bought my Gammill, I quilted it.  It was my first custom quilt and now, if it weren’t for the subject, I probably wouldn’t hang it up since the quilting needs improvement.  But since it is my only patriotic quilt that I haven’t given away, it hangs on the livingroom wall every summer.  The others have all been donated to Quilts of Valor.

Home, Freedom, Liberty, United, Faith, Life  These words and all that they mean are what America means to me.

The fireworks burst was quilted using metallic thread.

The next quilt was made a year ago and donated to Quilts of Valor, specifically to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg.  That’s why there’s paratroopers.  If my brain had been in gear when I made it, there would be sand instead of water.  Oh well.  Maybe someday I’ll make another one.

Thanks to all stand here at home and in foreign countries protecting and defending our freedom.  I appreciate the sacrifices that you and your family make for me to enjoy the life I live.

Enjoy your 4th of July.

  1. Hello,

I just came upon your quilt while looking for some 82 airborne or paratrooper fabric for a quilt I want to make my husband. It’s georgious. My husband is retired from the army and was a part of the 82 Airborne. Is that quilt for sale by any chance?

    • Lori, I’m sorry but the quilt isn’t for sale. The pattern is in a booklet called “America The Beautiful” by Debbie Mumm. Maybe you could make one of your own! My husband has started another QOV from the same booklet.

  2. I’m sorry to hear they aren’t for sale but glad you made it. I am totally in love with your paratrooper one. I showed it to my husband and it brought tears to his eyes. I thought you should know that a soldier loved it. I’m not good at quilting but I will look it up and try one out. You do beautiful work

  3. May I ask where you got your pattern. I love the Eagle. I have been looking for one like that. Both of my son’s have served in the military and would love to make them a quilt with an appliqued Eagle in the center.
    Thank you in advance.
    Quilty Hugs
